2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR!!!

What a school year!!! We ended last school year with remote learning for twelve weeks, and it was a challenge. We begin the year with remote learning..not what I wanted to do, but this is the new world we live in today. I am asking for your patience as we endure this new way of learning for our students. Teachers are learning new technology every day in order to engage our students. We are depending for technology to work. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me, Ms. Carter, or Mr. Gordon. We want to insure the success of every child. I want to see your child graduate and move to their next level. Let us work together and see everyone at the finish line in June 2021!
Your child has received my syllabus for the school year. If you need another copy of it, it is located at the bottom of the this page.
If you want to see the work that was done in school and the homework given, you are able to click 'Eighth Grade' on the left.
A few thoughts about the work the students will be doing this year:
The new math book series, Eureka Math, is a workbook that does not give examples like a regular textbook. Students must work out each problem in complete detail. Many of the problems must use conceptual thinking. Students are drawing out pictures explaining how and why a problem works. It is important that your child is taking copious notes in class. If I am writing on the board, I found it important to place in their workbook. You can check in with your child by asking them why are they doing what they are doing to solve the problem. If they cannot explain why, they must go back over the notes we practiced in class.
I am giving you another webpage where you are able to watch videos to help your child if they need more help:

I was told by another certified math teacher that Khan Academy has many videos on their webpage that speaks specifically to Eureka Math. The videos are there to help you understand what the student has to do in order to master the Common Core Standards. You may have to sign up to access their videos. Here is the webpage:

Also, have several documents located below I want to discuss with you.
I have placed the workbook pages we will be using throughout the year. You can find these pages in the 'Eighth Grade' section on the left at the bottom of the page. When you child needs a copy, he or she can come here.
If your child wants to retake a quiz or assessment, he or she is able to take a 'Pass for Retake' document. They will fill it out in its entirety and give it to me right before lunch on a Tuesday or Thursday. I will come and get them to retake the assessment. Copies are in my room and located at the bottom of this page. Just so you know, when a student retakes an assessment, he or she must show all of their work as well as explain why their answer works. I will grade the explanation along with their work. If the student does better than the original, I will exempt the original grade and place the new grade in the RETAKE column on Powerschool. If the student receives the same grade, I will show that the student took the assessment, but I will keep the original and exempt the RETAKE grade.
Also, if you child wants to have a discussion about classwork, homework, or anything pertaining to their grade, they are able to come and see me on a Tuesday or Thursday as well. That student will fill out the 'Pass for Discussion' sheet in its entirety and give it to me before a Tuesday or Thursday. I will get them during lunch, and we can have a conversation. That document is located below and also in my classroom.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please email me at [email protected]. The best way to contact me is just seeing me at school. I have an open door policy.
Take care of yourself, and thank you for everything you do!
Respectfully Submitted,

Mr. S. Jefferson, Jr.
